Not all cracks are the same
Customers ask for "crack repair" assuming all cracks respond to the same treatment. They do not. A 1mm shrinkage crack along a control joint is cosmetic and requires crack-chasing and filling. A 3mm diagonal crack running across a slab is structural and signals settlement or load-bearing failure.
Patching a structural crack with epoxy hides the failure until it gets worse. The crack reopens beside the fill, the slab continues to move, and the repair budget is spent without solving the underlying problem.

Adelaide settlement: reactive clay and drought-rebound
Adelaide's dry continental climate creates reactive soil movement that other cities do not see at the same scale. Clay soils swell when wet (winter) and shrink when dry (summer). A slab on Class M reactive clay without proper footings moves seasonally, creating diagonal cracks and step-differences across the slab.
Mitcham, Tea Tree Gully, and parts of Playford and Salisbury have the highest concentration of Class M and H reactive clay in metro Adelaide. Properties in these areas with older slabs (pre-2000, before AS 2870 footing design was widely applied) show the highest incidence of settlement repair enquiries.
Drought-rebound is a secondary cause: soils that previously received irrigation dry out completely during water restrictions and the clay compresses, then rebounds when rain returns. The slab does not have room to follow that movement if it is constrained by the building structure.
